HMD Vibe 2 5G Review: Budget Phone That Knows What It Is

Phones have gotten pretty expensive lately and finding something decent between Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 15,000 has become genuinely difficult in today's market. Most options in this range now ask you to compromise on something significant, be it software, build quality, display or battery. The HMD Vibe 2 5G doesn't promise to fix all of that, but it does something more useful. What it does promise is a sensible, no-frills experience for everyday use and sensible choices within its constraints. Whether it actually delivers on that is what this review is here to find out.

Design and Build: The Vibe 2 5G arrives with a dual-texture design on the rear. A slightly raised, glossy camera module at the top contrasted against a matte, muted finish on the rest of the back panel. It's a small design decision, but it works both aesthetically. The Lavender variant in particular stands apart from the sea of black and blue budget phones that crowd this segment. The overall back panel is simple without looking or feeling cheap.

Both the frame and the back panel are plastic, but the build quality doesn't betray that fact. The matte finish resists fingerprints well, and the phone has enough grip that using it without a cover is a reasonable choice. The silicon cover does come included in the box. At 210 grams and 8.6mm thick with a 6.75-inch screen, it leans towards the heavier and larger end of the spectrum. One-handed use is possible for most tasks, but reaching the top corners or pulling down the notification shade will frequently require a second hand.

Button placement is practical. The power and volume buttons fall naturally under the fingers. Also, the power button doubles as a fingerprint scanner, and it performs well. I was successfully able to unlock the device on the first attempt most of the times. Face unlock is also on board and works reliably in well-lit conditions.

The single speaker delivers loud enough volume for casual media consumption, though depth and richness in the sound are limited. Call quality, however, is good. Voices come through clearly without network-related complaints on either end. HMD has also included an IP64 rating, which means dust resistance and protection against water splashes are covered. 

Display: The Vibe 2 5G uses a 6.75-inch IPS LCD panel with an HD+ resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The 120Hz figure makes scrolling and UI navigation feel noticeably smooth and for this price bracket, it's a worthwhile addition. Colours are decent and brightness levels are sufficient for most indoor use cases, but next to an AMOLED panel, the display will look comparatively flat and less vibrant.

For everyday tasks, from browsing, reading, social media to video streaming, the screen is good. Texts look sharp. The large display size makes reading articles or PDFs comfortable over extended periods without any eye strain. So far so good. Outdoor visibility in direct sunlight at maximum brightness is also functional. Google Maps and UPI payments outdoors remain usable. However, the screen doesn't shine in harsh sunlight the way higher-brightness panels do.

Touch response is also accurate and fast. Occasional minor frame drops appear during heavy multitasking and while opening apps, but this is consistent with what most phones in this segment deliver.

Camera: At Rs. 12,999, the camera is never going to be the reason you buy a phone, and the Vibe 2 5G's camera system is honest about that. The primary sensor is a 50MP shooter, which sounds impressive on the spec sheet. However, the number alone doesn't tell the full story. What matters at this price is whether the camera is usable in real life, and the answer here is: mostly yes, within predictable limits. 

In good daylight with decent light falling on the subject, the camera produces balanced and clean-looking photos. Common subjects such as a building exterior, a plate of food, clothing textures, all come through with satisfactory detail for a budget phone. For social media sharing on Instagram or WhatsApp, the output is more than sufficient. Move indoors under artificial lighting, and the images get noticeably softer, with grain becoming visible fairly quickly. 

Portrait mode is present and works good for casual use. Edge detection handles clear subject-background separation reasonably well in straightforward scenes. When it comes to complex edges like that of hair, glasses and irregular outlines, this is where the accuracy drops off. That said, background blur looks natural enough in most cases. For social media, the output is acceptable.

The 8MP selfie camera takes great selfies in daylight. Skin tones are reasonable and detail is good for the use case most people have for front cameras at this price. In low light too, selfie quality doesn’t drop much.

Processor: The Unisoc T8200 processor powers the Vibe 2 5G, paired with 4GB of RAM and either 64GB or 128GB of storage. On paper, these are typical budget phone specifications. The phone performs exactly as that framing would suggest. The device performs well for standard daily tasks but without any headroom to spare for demanding workloads.

WhatsApp, Gmail, Chrome with multiple tabs, YouTube, Instagram, and UPI apps all run easily across a full day of use. App switching between common applications is also smooth. I kept 8 to 10 apps running in the background simultaneously, and I could manage those without any major lag. The processor's limits do surface occasionally. A heavier app opening for the first time might take an extra second or so. Casual gaming runs without significant issues.

The software is arguably the Vibe 2 5G's strong suit. Running Android 16, the phone offers a near-stock Android experience. The Settings app is straightforward and the notifications drawer is also organised sensibly. For buyers who value a clean software experience above all else, this could be a genuine differentiator.

Battery: The Vibe 2 5G houses a sizable 6000mAh battery. With a mixed daily load of WhatsApp, calls, Chrome browsing, YouTube, Instagram, UPI payments, Google Maps and occasional photography, the phone comfortably gets through a full day and, sometimes, into the next morning. Charging is handled at 18W, which is on the slower side and will take noticeably longer to fuel it to capacity.

Verdict: The HMD Vibe 2 5G is a budget phone that has its priorities in the right order. It doesn't try to impress with inflated specs or misleading marketing. It focuses on getting the fundamentals right. A clean software experience, a reliable battery, a large display and a build that doesn't feel like a compromise the moment it's in hand. At Rs. 12,999, it's a practical choice for anyone who needs a reliable daily driver for basic needs.
